Recycle Program

Since the beginning of Kingsport's recycling program, we have picked up more than five million pounds of recyclable material. This has helped to make newspapers, grocery bags, cardboard, fiber for carpets, Spic & Span containers, Proctor & Gamble products, plastic lumber, glass containers, aluminum cans, steel products and industrial heating oil. Way to go Kingsport! Your recycling will be picked up on the same day as your garbage. Check the Friday's FYI section in the Kingsport Times-News for the locations of local drop off centers.

What can be recycled?

  1. Paper
    • Newspapers and all the inserts.
    • Magazines, junk mail, catalogues, sticky notes, and envelopes.
    • You can either stack your paper items to the side of the bin or you can put them on top of your bin in a grocery bag and we will leave the bags with your refuse.
    • No cardboard, brown paper, food wrappers, or anything that doesn't tear.
  2. Plastic
    • Plastic containers that have the Recycling logo with a #1 or #2 on the bottom. Example: Soda bottle or milk jug.
    • Just rinse, remove the lids and crush your plastic containers. Step on them. You'll be saving space in your recycling bin and in our trucks.
    • Plastic containers containing automotive products, plastic wrap and plastic bags are not acceptable.
    • Remove all lids.
  3. Glass
    • Glass food and beverage containers.
    • Simply rinse and remove the lid. Labels do not have to be removed.
    • Windshields, plate glass, light bulbs, mirrors or other forms of glass are not acceptable.
  4. Cans
    • Aluminum and steel (tin) cans.
    • Please make sure cans are empty and rinsed out. Labels do not have to be removed. Aluminum cans can be crushed to save space in your bin and in our trucks.
