increased rate of deterioration
Through years of exposure to weather, road chemicals and heavy traffic volumes, the structural elements of the bridge have gradually deteriorated.  The majority of the deterioration is typical metal fatigue, e.g., cracking, corrosion, bending, and has been most prevalent in the “superstructure” of the bridge – although portions of the substructure also have evidence of scouring, spalling, and oxidation as well.
